INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP Print E-mail
Saturday, 27 February 2010 10:28

The Academy of Eating Disorders is to be congratulated for acknowledging the role of patients and carers in research and treatment.

Two Patient-Carer scholarships were awarded at the 2010 Academy of Eating Disorders international conference in Salzburg, Austria, in June.  I was delighted to be one of the two scholarship recipients. The other was US friend, author and outstanding eating disorder blogger Carrie Arnold (Carrie's blog is Ed Bites).

The AED Scholarship & Research Grant Information website explains that the two Patient/Carer Scholarships were made possible by a generous contribution to the Academy from Donna and Randy Friedman: These two one-time-only scholarships helped to enable Carrie and I to participate in valuable face-to-face exchange of ideas and information among researchers, clinicians, and patient/carers.

The knowledge and experience gained will be shared over months to come. Standby for exciting and heart-warming news, that has evolved from an amazing moment of shared serendipity, to be announced soon.

My Kid Is Back launch in London Print E-mail
Saturday, 27 February 2010 07:15

March 2010 is set to be an exciting time in raising awareness of Maudsley Family-Based Treatment with the launch in London of My Kid Is Back.

Routledge has acquired the exclusive European and North American distribution rights for My Kid Is Back* and will launch the book at a National Family Network Day in London on Saturday, March 13.

The national family network day is part of an exciting agenda for the Eating Disorders International Conference (EDIC 2010). This inaugural conference has been organized by b-eat - the leading UK charity for people with eating disorders and their families, in association with Wiley-Blackwell – publishers of the European Eating Disorders Review.

I will be in London from March 8 to March 13 to take part in events surrounding the UK release of My Kid Is Back. I look forward to this opportunity in raising awareness of Family-based Treatment for Anorexia.

For details of my book promotion schedule for My Kid Is Back go to: Routledge Mental Health - My Kid Is Back

The EDIC 2010 will take place at Kensington and the National Family Network Day will provide carers with a valuable opportunity to interact with healthcare professionals working in the field.

Chief executive of Beat, Susan Ringwood, has invited me to participate as a table host at the National Family Network Day. I'm excited about this opportunity to catch up with many people - families, carers, health practitioners and researchers - working tirelessly to raise awareness of eating disorders and evidence-based treatments.
Let me know if you will be there!

Laura Collins reviews My Kid Is Back Print E-mail

http://eatingwithyouranorexic.blogspot.com/

(Executive Director of F.E.A.S.T. (www.feast-ed.org), Laura Collins became an activist for improved eating disorder treatment after her daughter’s recovery from anorexia. Author of Eating With Your Anorexic (McGraw Hill), she is vice-chair of the Eating Disorders Coaliton's FAC, is a member of the Academy for Eating Disorders, and an ANAD resource person.)

The book I want you to read first (not mine)

Imagine this:

A book to clearly describe the history and concepts of the Family-Based Maudsley Approach.

A book with a range of real, detailed, and telling family stories.

A book that is accessible, well-written and focused.

A book that does not shy away from the very hard and frightening issues, yet isn't scary.

A book free of the myths of the past.

A book with no agenda or dogma.

An indictment of poor treatment seen in contrast to the incredible potential of good treatment.

A celebration of effective clinicians and loving families.

A work of optimism and belief in the concept of family.

That book is now available around the world. June Alexander has written the book I would like to see any family facing this illness given on the first day of diagnosis. "My Kid is Back" is a dream come true.

** And no, I don't get a commission or a prize and I don't endorse books unless I really believe in them. I wouldn't do that to fellow parents. If you don't believe me, let me send you the list of people who I've really annoyed by declining to write about his or her book. No one asked me to talk about this book. It stands on its own as a very much-needed tool for parents and it has shot to the top of my recommendations.
