June Alexander – Curriculum Vitae

June Alexander, born December 1950, at Bairnsdale, Australia.  In 2007 resigned from a career spanning 38 years in full-time print journalism to write non-fiction books. Focus: memoir-writing, mental health, social history, rural/country life.

Home is beside the sea on the Bellarine Peninsula, Victoria, Australia. Member of Australian Society of Authors, Victorian Writer’s Centre, national and international eating disorder academies (Academy of Eating Disorders, Australian and New Zealand Academy of Eating Disorders, Butterfly Eating Disorder Australian National Network). Family comprises four children and three grand children. Enjoy daily walks by seashore with Staffordshire terrier Harley. Enjoy reading and writing, flower and vegetable garden, sunsets and living in the moment.

  • 2011 Co-Editor with Prof. Janet Treasure of A Collaborative Approach to Eating Disorders, an international textbook for GPs and other health professionals on eating disorders, published by Routledge (UK)  (release date: June 12, 2011).

  • 2010-2013 Three-year term as co-chair on the Consumers and Carers Reference Group of the National Eating Disorders Collaboration (NEDC). This federally funded body aims to develop a nationally consistent approach to the prevention and management of eating disorders. http://www.nedc.com.au
  • 2010, November Editor of Down Memory Lane at Yarram a social history book containing stories written by the town’s senior residents.
  • 2010, October Addressed annual conference of the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) in NYC, and eating disorder research teams at the University of Chicago and at the University of California (San Diego), bridging the gap between evidence-based research outcomes and treatment.
  • 2010, June Recipient of one of two international scholarships to attend International Conference on Eating Disorders in Salzburg, Austria. The award is in recognition of writing contribution in raising awareness of eating disorders.
  • 2010, March London launch ofMy Kid is Back. Routledge (UK), acquired European and North American rights to My Kid is Back, (collaborator is Prof. Daniel Le Grange, University of Chicago) and launched this book in London at a National Family Network Day as part of the Eating Disorder International Conference (EDIC).
  • 2009, March Melbourne launch of My Kid is Back – Empowering Parents to Beat Anorexia Nervosa, a family-based early intervention treatment for anorexia nervosa. Written in collaboration with Professor Daniel le Grange, director of the Eating Disorder unit at the University of Chicago. Published by Melbourne University Publishers. Foreword by Dr Ivan Eisler, King’s College, London.
  • 2005 – 2007 Editor of The Great Southern Star newspaper, Leongatha.
  • 2006 Editor of Tucker ‘n’ Tales, social history of women who settled in the Latrobe Valley region of Victoria.
